Salt Spring Literacy
Salt Spring Literacy needs volunteers
to fill all sorts of roles.
Tutors of all abilities are needed, especially
anyone who has struggled with learning disabilities themselves. We
particularly need tutors for English; basic and further, English as a
Second Language, maths; basic and further, and for computers. We also
need volunteers for other roles such as our Friendship project where
volunteers are matched with immigrants or refugees to show them around
and help them settle in to life here. We also need people to host
conversation groups where people learning English can practice in an
informal chatty environment. Plus we need volunteers for outreach in
marginalised communities, such as the homeless or those with mental
health problems and for fundraising and publicity.
No special skills are required – just wanting to
help is good enough for us! We offer our volunteers as much or as
little training as they feel they need. Some volunteers attend many
workshops and training sessions while others who are already well
qualified and confident often choose not to. We have lots of training
and resources available though, at any time. Volunteers are not
committed to any particular time – just volunteer when you can for as
long as you can.
Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal
empowerment and a means for social and human development. Educational
and employment opportunities depend on literacy. By volunteering
with us you will help empower people, enable them to work themselves
out of poverty, to integrate with their community and to help them
help their children, thus breaking the cycle of illiteracy. Trust me
that will give a very warm and fuzzy feeling in your belly. Not to
mention the tea and coffee and cookies and gossip we like to share.
Friendships, tea, biscuits and a warm fuzzy feeling of goodness what
more could you want!

need for volunteer drivers with their own car to drive seniors
to and from medical appointments both on Salt Spring and off island
(generally to Victoria) during the day Monday through Fridays, and
around Salt Spring for other needs and appointments.
Accommodating your life schedule, Volunteers drive on a rotating basis
- generally once every week or two in the morning or afternoon,
although if you have more time we're happy to have you. On-island
drives generally involve a 1-2 hour shift. Off-island may take all
day, and the occasional early start of late back may be necessary.
Drivers are dispatched as required by volunteers at the Seniors
Society, generally with generous advance notice.
Drivers should be experienced and have an excellent driving record. An
interview will be required. Ferry expenses are covered, and the
Society will arrange special insurance coverage. Drivers may opt
to receive a tax donation receipt or a fixed rate of cash for expenses
per trip from the Society.
The Salt Spring Senior Services Society exists to offer assistance in
various areas of senior living for those 55+. The Drivers Program exists to provide
free and available transportation for any senior citizen who needs it,
so that no senior finds him/herself housebound. Volunteer drivers will
receive the grateful appreciation from the many seniors they help.

SOLID
(The Saltspring Organization for Life Improvement and Development) is
looking for 1-2 keen volunteers who wish to dedicate 4 hours a
day, 4 days a week to open the SOLID Exchange, offer retail sales
of artisan handicrafts and share information about SOLID’s
projects in Africa.
The SOLID
Exchange is an effort to address global wealth inequality by
creatively linking our island with African communities for exchange of
goods, ideas and much needed resources.
The SOLID
Exchange would be open every Wednesday - Saturday from 10:30am -
2:30pm at 125 McPhillips Avenue (beside the library). There is a
variety of handcrafted items for sale. All these crafts are purchased
directly from the artisans at a living wage price.
Volunteers
should have a love of learning and a passion for assisting communities
less affluent that ourselves, and some experience with retail sales
would be an asset but is not essential. This position offers
volunteers the unique opportunity to learn more about community led
projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, do something to assist those projects,
and raise awareness of the issues faced by the poverty stricken and
HIV/AIDS affected communities SOLID serves.
The proceeds of
craft sales will go directly to support SOLID projects in Africa and
to re-purchase stock directly from the artisans. The direct linkage
through fair trade practices means the African craftspeople receive
much needed resources as a hand up, not a hand out.
Since opening,
the SOLID Exchange has been able to fund: fruit trees through the sale
of ‘Apples for Orphans’ cards; donations to the Grannies in Lesotho; a
well in Zimbabwe; and coats for kids in Swaziland.
