The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary
- Unit 25 Gulf Islands - needs volunteers who will be active in marine
search and rescue and the provision of boating safety information and
education to the community.
Volunteers must have a respect for authority, be able to endure all
weather conditions, demonstrate good physical and mental health,

Salt Spring
Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC)
The Salt Spring Parks and
Recreation Commission (PARC) is looking a volunteer member
to serve on the Commission.
Salt Spring Island is an
unincorporated rural Electoral District under the jurisdiction of the
Capital Regional District (CRD). The CRD is responsible for many of
the Southern Gulf Islands and a large area of the southern portion of
Vancouver Island. The Salt Spring Parks and Recreation Commission (PARC)
is a local arm of the CRD and is responsible to the CRD Board.
The activities of PARC are lead by an
8-member locally-appointed Commission. The CRD Director (an elected
official) also sits on the Commission. The Commission functions, in
most ways, as a municipal Parks and Recreation Commission or Parks
Board would. PARC members are appointed for two-year terms by the CRD
Board.
PARC is responsible for the
establishment, ongoing operation and maintenance of all:
- community parks and park athletic
fields on Salt Spring;
- public trails and linear parks;
- waterfront parks and recreation
areas at various locations;
- park reserves;
- Camp Colossal children's day camp
program;
- operation of Rainbow Road indoor pool;
- the park Legacy Program;
- provision of tennis courts in
public parks;
- the Market in the Park at
Centennial Park; and,
- support for community groups; in
addition to planning for future needs and development of community
recreation facilities.
As a PARC volunteer you should have an interest in
the community as a whole, with an emphasis on community recreation needs;
experience in community governance is helpful.
The Commission holds 1
to 2 main meetings per month on the 2nd and 4th Monday evening of the
month from 7-9 p.m.
Additional meetings are held depending on subcommittee involvement,
and some afternoon participation may be involved. Orientation and historical information
will be provided and local administrative staff are available as
needed for support.
This is an exciting opportunity for you, as
a volunteer, to gain a better understanding of community governance
and have the opportunity to participate in community parks and
recreational project planning for our beautiful Island.

Salt Spring Literacy
Salt Spring Literacy needs volunteers
to fill all sorts of roles.
Tutors of all abilities are needed, especially
anyone who has struggled with learning disabilities themselves. We
particularly need tutors for English; basic and further, English as a
Second Language, maths; basic and further, and for computers. We also
need volunteers for other roles such as our Friendship project where
volunteers are matched with immigrants or refugees to show them around
and help them settle in to life here. We also need people to host
conversation groups where people learning English can practice in an
informal chatty environment. Plus we need volunteers for outreach in
marginalised communities, such as the homeless or those with mental
health problems and for fundraising and publicity.
No special skills are required – just wanting to
help is good enough for us! We offer our volunteers as much or as
little training as they feel they need. Some volunteers attend many
workshops and training sessions while others who are already well
qualified and confident often choose not to. We have lots of training
and resources available though, at any time. Volunteers are not
committed to any particular time – just volunteer when you can for as
long as you can.
Literacy is a human right, a tool of personal
empowerment and a means for social and human development. Educational
and employment opportunities depend on literacy. By volunteering
with us you will help empower people, enable them to work themselves
out of poverty, to integrate with their community and to help them
help their children, thus breaking the cycle of illiteracy. Trust me
that will give a very warm and fuzzy feeling in your belly. Not to
mention the tea and coffee and cookies and gossip we like to share.
Friendships, tea, biscuits and a warm fuzzy feeling of goodness what
more could you want!

SOLID
(The Saltspring Organization for Life Improvement and Development) is
looking for 1-2 keen volunteers who wish to dedicate 4 hours a
day, 4 days a week to open the SOLID Exchange, offer retail sales
of artisan handicrafts and share information about SOLID’s
projects in Africa.
The SOLID
Exchange is an effort to address global wealth inequality by
creatively linking our island with African communities for exchange of
goods, ideas and much needed resources.
The SOLID
Exchange would be open every Wednesday - Saturday from 10:30am -
2:30pm at 125 McPhillips Avenue (beside the library). There is a
variety of handcrafted items for sale. All these crafts are purchased
directly from the artisans at a living wage price.
Volunteers
should have a love of learning and a passion for assisting communities
less affluent that ourselves, and some experience with retail sales
would be an asset but is not essential. This position offers
volunteers the unique opportunity to learn more about community led
projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, do something to assist those projects,
and raise awareness of the issues faced by the poverty stricken and
HIV/AIDS affected communities SOLID serves.
The proceeds of
craft sales will go directly to support SOLID projects in Africa and
to re-purchase stock directly from the artisans. The direct linkage
through fair trade practices means the African craftspeople receive
much needed resources as a hand up, not a hand out.
Since opening,
the SOLID Exchange has been able to fund: fruit trees through the sale
of ‘Apples for Orphans’ cards; donations to the Grannies in Lesotho; a
well in Zimbabwe; and coats for kids in Swaziland.

Transitions Thrift Store, an IWAV initiative, has an immediate and ongoing need for any
number of Volunteers to assist with everyday store operations
in their community-based thrift store in downtown Ganges at #1 - 144
McPhillips Avenue (entrance off the parking lot, next door to the
Roasting Company).
No experience is necessary, but Volunteers must have a positive
attitude and a willingness to work in a cooperative and respectful
manner. Orientation to store operations, policies and procedures
is provided.
Volunteers are critical in helping Transitions fulfill its purpose of
raising funds to support the programs and services of Island Women
Against Violence (Transition House, Help Line, Outreach Services,
Counselling Programs for Women and Children affected by violence and
abuse). As a volunteer you will gain lots of social interaction
with the public and co-workers, retail and social service work
experience, the thrill of working with second-hand items, a supportive
and flexible manager and staff, and an opportunity to contribute to
the community in a meaningful way.
Shifts vary, and can
be scheduled
anytime between 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week.
