Salt Spring Literacy Society needs a new treasurer to join its board of directors. Duties include reporting the society’s financial status at monthly or bi-monthly board meetings, signing cheques and monitoring accounts, assisting the SSLS coordinator with financial reporting for two annual government grants, creating the annual budget with input from staff and board members, and liaising with the accountant for the annual financial statement.

Time commitment:

An average of three hours per month, plus board meeting attendance, and some participation as a board member in other SSLS activities, such as the Giant Book & Jewellery Sale.

SSLS is dedicated to promoting literacy through building awareness, collaborative partnerships and service provision so that people can participate more fully in life. Its motto is “Learn. Grow. Succeed.” Its services are free.

Organizations Services:

The society offers one-on-one tutoring for adults (including ESL), reading programs in Salt Spring’s elementary schools and for seniors, computer/tech assistance, exam invigilation and more.

Desired Skills:

The treasurer position would be ideal for someone with some business experience or past experience as treasurer, but training will be provided for the right person.
