New BC Societies Act

The New BC Societies Act is legislation that was passed in spring 2015.   It governs how societies (not-for-profit corporations) are created and run in B.C. and includes significant updates to allow for more flexibility in how societies operate, while still protecting the public interest.

The new Societies Act came into effect on Nov. 28, 2016. In the two years following that date, every pre- existing society will be required to “transition” to the new Act.  Societies have two years to bring their by-laws into compliance, however, as of November 28, 2016, they are required to “act” in compliance to the new legislation.
